August Volunteer of the Month

September 3, 2009

Everybody needs a little something to get their day started right. A cup of coffee. The morning paper. At the Red Cross of Central Maryland the day just wouldn’t begin the same without a warm greeting from Vi Reddish, volunteer senior aide.

Reddish works at the front desk Monday thru Wednesday mornings and her welcoming attitude is the reason she was named the Volunteer of the Month for August 2009.

“From the first day she walked into this building she greeted everyone with a smile and would help you, no questions asked,” says Olivia Dance, Red Cross Health and Safety customer service representative about the reason she nominated Reddish for the honor.

Front desk volunteers are an important component of the Red Cross team. They are the first face visitor’s encounter when they visit us. Good customer service skills are essential to the position.

Reddish, who is a 63 year old grandmother of one, is just reentering the work force after being out for health reasons for the past 20 years. She has been volunteering with the Red Cross since June.

“I am so blessed,” says Reddish. “Everyone here is so nice and so laid back.”

Scouts Take Cue From Squirrel

Squiggy the Safety Squirrel (along with his human helpers) recently presented Red Cross information to Cub Scout Pack 999 in Harford County. The scouts learned about disaster preparedness and how to help their families during an emergency. Here is what the Cubmaster had to say about the presentation:

“I am glad we had Squiggy come as that really helped keep the boys interested. Thanks again for providing the programs to groups such as ours. It is important information and it is a great way for the Scouts and kids to learn about what to do in an emergency. Hopefully it will even start a dialogue at home where the Scout will talk to their parents about it.” — Tony Nardi, Cubmaster Pack 999.

Red Cross volunteers were also there on Monday for 10 families needing help after three fires damaged multiple homes in the area. This has been a particularly busy January for the Red Cross.
